meimichi asked: harry/luna :3

Five years after the war, Harry Potter realized, with a bone-crushing weariness, that he was tired. Of course he’d been tired during the war, but that was different. That was a stomach-knotting exhaustion, rife with tension and a consistent reminder of you cannot fail. After the war, everyone was high from the victory and from relief. Including Harry. Finally, Voldemort was defeated. Finally, he could rest. Finally, things could be normal. Perhaps, finally, he could even be happy. And he was, for awhile.

Trauma settled in like a snake. His doctor had told him that it had always been there, but that he’d just been resilient. Like most young people, the doctor had added with a chuckle.

But his ongoing nightmares proved otherwise. Inside, the war still went on. Guilt wracked through him, leaving painful reminders wherever it crawled, leaving names. Cedric. Sirius. Dumbledore. Fred. Lupin. Tonks.

Harry knew he was a broken man, but he hadn’t wanted Ginny to have to suffer because of him. He knew she wanted to continue on to accomplish great things, while he couldn’t even leave the bed most mornings. She had been stubborn and insisted on staying with him. This went on for four years. She deserved better. If you had asked them, neither one would be able to say exactly when they had fallen out of love with each other.

“I think you should come with me,” Luna said one morning. A few months after Ginny had left, Luna had made it a habit to come visit him. Every day, precisely at eight in the morning, except for Thursdays—for a reason only Luna could understand. At first, he had resented her—he hated feeling sorry for himself, but it was even worse when other people did it. But then he grew to appreciate her company and slowly acknowledged that she probably needed his as well.

Harry glanced up from his cup of tea with a small smile. “You don’t have to humor me, Luna. I know Hermione and Ron asked you to look after me and all, but I’m perfectly fine.”

“You’re not fine, you’re getting better,” she pointed out.

“Anyway, where would we even go?” Harry asked.

“We could look for nargles.”

Harry groaned. “I don’t know, Luna…I don’t think I’d be very good company. Not right now…”

“Nonsense, Harry,” she said airily, “I have always enjoyed your company, ever since back then.”

“But…I’m not the same as before,” Harry murmured. Surely Hermione must have told her. Surely she knew why Ginny had left him. Because he wasn’t the same man anymore.

“War changes people, Harry,” Luna said quietly. “It’s perfectly okay to accept that. And it’s perfectly okay to move on as the person you are now. You don’t have to be Harry Potter from five years ago, the boy who didn’t exist without Voldemort.”

Harry thought about her words for a moment, studying her face. She was still strange in so many ways, and Harry would never, ever dare to dream of comprehending what went on inside her head, but Luna was still the same. Until you really looked at her and saw the haunted calmness about her. Perhaps this trip wasn’t really just about him. Maybe it was about her, too.

“Let’s go then,” he agreed with a genuine smile.

She beamed at him. “Great! I’ll go get my things.”

He laughed, but didn’t bother to tell her that he hadn’t meant right now. He didn’t mind. Right now seemed a good time as any to move on with his life.
